All about being a Mother's Help

Mother's Helps are generally unqualified nannies working alongside a mother but does not yet have enough experience to be left in constant sole charge of children. Mother's Helps may work well for parents who work from home or parents who work part-time and want housework and childcare combined.

Qualification of a Mother's Help

A Mother's Help should be older than 20 years of age and should stay at least 12 months. They may have no formal qualifications but should have good experience with children. They may have cared for siblings, done regular babysitting or helped out at a local playgroup. 

  • First aid training would be very useful
  • Smokers are not acceptable
  • driver’s license and safe driving history
  • English good or very good
  • Reliable, honest, and trustworthy
  • Physical ability to care for a young child

Duties of a Mothers Help

Their duties are to assist the mother with the children and generally help around the house, e.g. vacuuming, dusting, preparing meal, laundry and ironing.

These positions would suit girls who love children and want to work with them while in a family environment. Girls must be flexible with regard to duties.

  • Baby sits 2-3 evenings per week
  • More responsibility, younger children and/or longer hours, more housework
  • Works up to 10 hours, 5 days per week
  • Care for more children (4+) at times without parental presence
  • With younger children (under 2) they must start work under the parent's supervision, rather than taking charge, but there may be occasions when they need to have sole charge.

Here are some major responsibilities of a Mothers Help but it depends on the family:

  • Childcare; providing one-to-one attention, allowing them to learn and play
  • Working alongside the parents to look after the child
  • Preparing and cooking light meals for children
  • Shopping duties, general help with household tasks
  • Cleaning and household duties such as washing and ironing

Benefits and Payment of a Mother's Help

Mothers' Helps can be live-in or live-out and they tend to do the same sort of hours as a nanny. Mother's Helps expect to work about ten hours a day for live-in, although two nights babysitting are included in the salary (babysitting is extra for a live-out).

There are various roles Mother’s helps perform, each offering different benefits:

Live-in Mother’s Help stay in the house so they can get up with the children, help with getting dressed and the breakfast routine as well as babysitting duties.

Live-in Mother’s Help requires her own bedroom and bathroom (in some cases they may have to share the bathroom with the children). Childminder’s room should be furnished and have a television and DVD player, a desk and good storage space. House rules should be made clear from the start and also mentioned in the contract.

The food is provided and paid for by the employer.

Live-in Mother’s Help receives at least 1 full free day and 3 evenings off However, time off varies from one job to another. Baby-sitting is by arrangement with the family.

Live-in Mother’s Helps are entitled to a minimum of 4-weeks paid holiday. National Bank holidays are given or additional payment is made. Holiday time is taken at a mutually agreed time. Some families agree holiday time using a combination of 2 weeks the Employer chooses and 2 weeks the Employee chooses.

If the family requires their childminder to come on holiday with them, then this must be discussed and agreed prior to employment commencement. All travels expenses, food and weekly wage will also need to be covered by the employer.

Salaries will depend upon age, experience, and the duties involved and will range from £130 - £180 (net) per week. Please note those are only guide minimums. Each position is individually negotiated and more experienced Live-in Mother’s Helps may command higher salaries.

Please note: When you earn more than £144 per week, you have to be registered as an employer for tax and national insurance.

 

Live out Mother’s Help do not live in the family home. They will usually perform night-time babysitting duties on request.

The employer of a Live out Mother’s Help should provide her lunch during a normal working day. If the Live out Mother’s Help works overtime, is taken on holiday, breakfast and/or dinner should also be provided.

Live out Mother’s Help receives at least 1 full free day and 3 evenings off However, time off varies from one job to another. Baby-sitting is by arrangement with the family and paid separately.

Salaries vary according to age and experience but a Mother’s Help who is very flexible and will support the family in all child related belongings can earn up to £230 (GBP) per week for a live-out position. You have to be registered as an employer for tax and national insurance.

Please note each job is unique and varies according to the family's personal requirements. Some jobs offer travel, some offer a car for own use, some have their own bathroom. However, please note that none of these things can be guaranteed and the most important thing is that the right girl goes to the right family.
